Munich Travel Guide: Shopping

Shopping in Munich

The main shopping area where a large amount of huge department stores and shops are located, is the Kaufinger-/Neuhauserstrasse between Stachus (Karlsplatz) and Marienplatz. There, you find nearly everything you are looking for.
In the Sendlinger Strasse between Marienplatz and Sendlinger Tor, there are lots of smaller shops with reasonable prices that sell various things, e.g. shoes, perfumes and clothes.
Around the Viktualienmarkt and in the street between Marienplatz and Isartor, called "Tal", there is a large variety of different shops where furniture and household articles are offered, as well as many old-established shops.
When you are looking for exclusive brands like Armani, Chanel, Dior etc., it is best to go to the Theatiner-, Residenz- and Maximiliansstrasse. Within the last few years, there has been developed a number of modern shopping arcades in this area as well, for example the "Fünf Höfe" in the Theatinerstrasse.
If you want to buy delicacies and exclusive coffee, it is best to go to Dallmayr in the Diener Strasse between Marienplatz and Maximiliansstrasse.

For fresh vegetables, meat, wine, cheese and flowers, you must not miss the Viktualienmarkt, which is even worth a visit just to get the atmosphere.

However, it is not only possible to go shopping in the center of Munich. In Schwabing, there is quite a variety of small shops with different articles as well. For example, in the Hohenzollernstrasse, there are many designer boutiques with fashionable clothes, second-hand shops as well as perfumeries and shoe shops.

In the university district, i.e. Schelling- and Türkenstrasse, there also are a few designer boutiques as well as quite many book shops (new and antique books).

In the district around the Gärtnerplatz and in Haidhausen, it is good to look around for jewelleries, handmade craft and antiques.

There are also three shopping centers which might be quite useful when it is raining: the newest one is the Riem Arcades in the east of Munich (Messestadt Ost); in the east as well, but in Neuperlach, there is the PEP, and near the Olympic Park, there is a shopping center called OEZ.
